چکیده

The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear accident brought together compromised irradiated fuel and large amounts of seawater in a high radiation field. Based on newly acquired thermochemical data for a series of uranyl peroxide compounds containing charge-balancing alkali cations, here we show that nanoscale cage clusters containing as many as 60 uranyl ions, bonded through peroxide and hydroxide bridges, are likely to form in solution or as precipitates under such conditions. These species will enhance the corrosion of the damaged fuel and, being thermodynamically stable and kinetically persistent in the absence of peroxide, they can potentially transport uranium over long distances.

Enrichment and removal of uranyl ions by using polymeric supports: A review

At one hand uranium is an element of considerable technological importance. In nuclear power plants uranium is used as fuel. Other than this, uranium has no significant commercial use. On the other hand uranium is highly toxic and radioactive heavy metal that mainly originates from nuclear-related activities and causes significant environmental and public health problems by its presence in terr...

A model for the influence of steel corrosion products on nuclear fuel corrosion under permanent disposal conditions

A model was developed to determine the influence of steel corrosion products on a-radiolytic corrosion of spent nuclear fuel inside a failed waste container. The model takes into account the a-radiolysis of water, the reaction of radiolytic H2O2 with UO2 both directly and via galvanic coupling with noble metal particles, the reaction with H2 via galvanic coupling, and the Fenton reaction. The d...

Interactions between Carbon Steel and Uo2 Corrosion Fronts inside a Failed Nuclear Waste Container

The corrosion of carbon steel in the chloride-dominated groundwaters anticipated inside a failed spent fuel waste container has been studied in the presence of small concentrations of added hydrogen peroxide. Solutions with peroxide concentrations in the micro-molar range were found to accelerate steel corrosion slightly leading to the formation of Fe-containing corrosion product deposits but n...

An improved model for the corrosion of used nuclear fuel inside a failed waste container under permanent disposal conditions

An improved model for nuclear fuel corrosion inside a failed waste container has been developed. The model considers the influence of the a-radiolysis products using a full radiolytic reaction set, and demonstrates that H2O2 is the dominant oxidant. Corrosion of the fuel is modelled considering both the direct oxidation of UO2 by H2O2 and the galvanically-coupled oxidation by H2O2 reduction on ...

Roles of Radiolytic and Externally Generated H2 in the Corrosion of Fractured Spent Nuclear Fuel.

A 2-D model for the corrosion of spent nuclear fuel inside a failed nuclear waste container has been modified to determine the influence of various redox processes occurring within fractures in the fuel. The corrosion process is driven by reaction of the fuel with the dominant α radiolysis product, H2O2. A number of reactions are shown to moderate or suppress the corrosion rate, including H2O2 ...
